Meet Electric Eel Productions...
I met these super nice gentleman a few months ago. They did some really great work with singer/songwriter Theresa Walker, a new artist on Acoustic Fuel Radio. If you are in search of a producer or recording studio, check them out. For more information, you can visit them on the web at www.myspace.com/electriceelproductions.
Here's some of what we talked about...
1) What is your musical background?
Kosta Lois (Producer): I started with classical piano and theory lessons from a very young age. Music is like a first language to me. This love for music and training developed into traditional composition, and then into jazz performance/composition, and of course into songwriting and producing! Production and composing/songwriting is where my greatest passion is today.
Adam Snyder (Composer / Operations Manager): Taking guitar lessons at age 13, and practicing how to play many different styles ranging from classical, jazz, blues, and rock throughout high school. Then going to college where I was further trained in music theory, harmony, and composition. I have performed live many times in various bands, and was the main composer / manager for a 12-piece R&B/funk band. I recorded my first full length CD in 2003, and shortly after, moved to L.A. to form Electric Eel Productions with Kosta Lois. My greatest passion is writing and recording original music - and my strong points are playing electric and acoustic guitar, writing lyrics, melodies, and chord changes / arrangements.
2) Where are you located?
North Hollywood, CA
3) What type of projects are you looking for?
Artists who want to take their music to another level and who are open to experimenting with what is BEST for their song/music. I also enjoy co-writing and collaboration, or getting to know and understanding an artist more to write music for them (many artists just prefer to sing). We can also work on any project that needs original composition/production (Examples: Film scoring, music for theatrical trailers, TV shows, advertising spots, websites, voice-overs, radio spots, etc…)
4) Talk about some of your recent projects.
We've been working on a full length album with Clinton Smith, who is a very eclectic electronic/experimental type artist. We have co-written the entire album with him, except for one track in which we fully wrote. We are at the stage of me mixing the record right now, and then taking it to a mastering facility. It is definitely a very cool and unique record that doesn't really sound like anything out there right now.
Also we’ve been producing and playing on tracks for Theresa Walker, who is a singer/songwriter who writes some great original material. We've also just started working on and recording for a project with Dominique Alexander, a pop/r&b type artist with interest from Interscope and Geffen records. We continually compose and update our production music catalogue for placements in film and TV.
5) What type of deals do you have for independent artists/labels?
It's on a per project basis, depending on how much involvement they want from EEP. That could mean any number of things from engineering/mixing, producing, writing/co-writing, performing, etc. We can also become a full-service facility and see the project from the inception to the completion!
6) What advice would you give to independent artists/labels who are looking for a place to record?
Choose somewhere that totally fits your needs as an artist. If you need to work with a producer, often times that is better than trying to do it all on your own because you will have a second opinion. If you know and are confident with your sound/songs and just want to record, make sure you go somewhere that engineers great recordings. Make sure you don't try and record at home by yourself if you haven't learned what it takes to engineer a record that sounds good. So many people who don't know how to get a good recording make their first mistake by trying to do it themselves on their computer, and don't get their message across as it should sound! The good thing about Electric Eel is that we can do one or all those things in a one stop shop.
7) What are some of the competitive advantages Electric Eel has over other studios/production teams?
Kosta Lois (Producer): Our biggest advantage is that we are both musically inclined. Sometimes if a singer works with a producer who doesn't understand music, their are many things that go overlooked in their recordings. The monumental producers out there understand how music works, can do excellent arrangements, and are great musicians aka Quincy Jones, Babyface, Will.I.Am etc.... Adam is an excellent musician, guitarist and can write great songs, chord changes and guitar parts, in addition to well thought out lyrics and melodies. My strength is in hearing the song as a whole, creating a killer arrangement and making sure that arrangement doesn't get in the way of the song/lead vocal. Of course I also bring to the table my expertise in composition, audio engineering/producing (getting that great sound), any piano or keyboard parts, drum programming, and vocal arrangement. My responsibility to the company is making sure that every project leaves our studio sounding great and making everyone we work with happy with their music! I should also mention that we have great gear and microphones to record with (a huge advantage), so those of you who know about recording should check out our private studio. Since we live in L.A. we are also are affiliated with several world class studios if you have a larger budget and want to mix on an SSL.
7) What is on the horizon for Electric Eel?
There are many bright things to come in the future, as we continue to grow and grow. We've been doing this full on for about 3 years, and every year we grow in leaps and bounds compared to the previous year.
8) What direction do you see the music business going in?
Kosta Lois (Producer): I'd love to see the music business flourish with independent music, and for those indie musicians to be able to make a great living doing what they do if they have talent and great music to offer the world. I feel the major labels are diminishing in strength, and that you can do everything on your own these days, which means creative freedom for everyone. Right now, everything seems to be in limbo, there is a lot off piracy online, and the true art of making a complete 'album' is being lost to making that one hit song to download. I'd like to see (and would love to work with) the next artist or band that changes music forever, like the Beatles or Michael Jackson has done. Who's going to be that next act that captures the heart of the whole world, and that goes down in history? We need one! That's what my purpose as a producer is all about!
